You may have heard about National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® through a friend or family member, or perhaps seen something about it on your local Minnesota news. Learning more about it, especially as a parent of a young preteen or teen, can help prepare you to utilize the resources and information available to make a positive impact on the life of your child.

What is National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week?

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, also referred to as NDAFW, is an annual event that is observed nationally, developed with the goal of providing facts-based education and resources to teens to encourage them to avoid drugs and alcohol. This year, it will take place January 22nd through the 28th.

The motto of NDAFW is SHATTER THE MYTHS®, centered around the goal to counteract the widespread messages about alcohol and drug use that teens often encounter on television, in movies, and especially on the Internet and social media. Launched in 2010 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it has quickly become a growing event that has spread nationwide. Many Minnesota schools and community centers plan special events during NDAFA, specifically hosting Q&A sessions where teens can connect with scientists and experts to learn the facts behind addiction and drug use.

NDAFW is a valuable tool in reducing teen drug use and addiction, arming students with the straight facts to deter them from drug use. With teen addiction rising to concerning levels in Minnesota and the rest of the United States, it is critical that parents, teachers, and community leaders come together to do everything they can to prevent the introduction of drug and alcohol to teenagers.

Anthony Louis Center is a Minnesota teen rehab center with a passionate team of professionals that dream of a day when drug treatment centers for teens are no longer needed, and drug use in young adults is defeated. For this reason, we are thrilled to support NDAFW. Among drug addiction treatment centers for teens, our program is unique in that it focuses heavily on developing a strong support system (family, friends, and community) to stand behind the teen after they exit our center.
We understand how isolating it can feel to have a teen struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. However, our caring team at Anthony Louis Center strives to let every parent know that they are not alone in facing this battle. If your teen is struggling with addiction, or you know of a teen that is, you are welcome to contact our center to learn more about how we can help support you in planning their path to recovery.
